Chicago Cubs Miss Out on Top Outfield Target to Toronto Blue Jays

The Chicago Cubs have lost out on a key offensive target, Anthony Santander, a blow for a team in need of hitting reinforcements. Throughout the offseason, the Cubs were linked to the switch-hitting slugger, though the depth of their interest was unclear. Despite their average performance at the plate last season, Chicago’s lineup could have greatly benefitted from an additional bat as they look to improve in 2025.

While acquiring Kyle Tucker is a positive step, relying on just one player to boost the offense isn’t enough. Santander would have provided the Cubs with another reliable hitter to help protect the lineup and deliver consistent production.

However, that opportunity is no longer available. According to Ari Alexander of KPRC2, Santander has agreed to a five-year, $92 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, which could escalate to $110 million with options. At an average annual value of $18.5 million, Santander would have been a great addition for the Cubs at that price.

Even with concerns about his defense, Santander’s offensive potential makes this deal a steal. In 2024, he posted a career-best 44 home runs. While there are doubts about his ability to maintain such a high level of production, the Cubs’ underperforming offense last season raises questions about why they didn’t pursue him more aggressively.

It’s unclear whether Chicago made an official offer, but either way, they must act swiftly to add another bat to the lineup.
