The Tennessee Titans are reportedly considering parting ways with star defender Harold Landry during the upcoming NFL offseason. Despite being in a strong financial position with around $50 million in cap space, the Titans could still look to reduce some salary, and Landry is among the potential candidates for release.
While Landry recorded nine sacks this season, which may appear impressive on the surface, deeper statistical analysis suggests his production is declining. In his second full season after recovering from a torn ACL, Landry posted a career-low 9.2 pressure rate, far below his pre-injury form, when he accumulated 62 total pressures. This decline in performance has raised concerns about his effectiveness moving forward.
Cutting Landry would free up $24.9 million in cap space, making it a viable option for the Titans as they continue to adjust their roster. There were even rumors during the trade deadline that the team might move him. Although Landry posted solid overall statistics, including 71 tackles, nine sacks, and four passes defended, his pass-rushing grade of just 49.6 on Pro Football Focus signals potential regression in his play.
The 28-year-old was drafted by the Titans in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft after a standout college career at Boston College. Landry quickly established himself as one of Tennessee’s key defensive players, posting nine sacks and 68 tackles in his second season. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2021 after tallying 75 tackles and 12 sacks, but an ACL tear derailed his 2022 campaign. In 2023, he bounced back with 70 tackles and 10.5 sacks, but the Titans, who are currently in a rebuilding phase, may opt to part ways with Landry to free up significant financial resources.
