Three former Georgia Bulldogs are projected to be selected within the top 15 of the recent NFL mock draft.
As the college football season comes to a close, the focus shifts to the NFL playoffs and subsequently, the NFL draft, making mock drafts a popular subject. This year, Georgia boasts a solid number of draft-eligible players, several of whom are being projected for first-round selections.
ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has released his latest first-round mock draft, which includes three former Bulldogs making it into the first round, all within the top 15. According to ESPN’s analysis, this would set a record for the most players from a single college drafted that early in the same year. Here’s a look at the players and Kiper’s insights on them.
Mykel Williams, DE, New York Jets, 7th overall
“I have a feeling Williams will be drafted higher than many anticipate—he’s ranked 12th on my board—and he could enhance New York’s edge presence. He requires coaching (Aaron Glenn would be an excellent choice for his development if hired by the Jets) and has room for growth in his pass-rushing technique. However, I see the potential for him to achieve 10-12 sacks per season. Williams reminds me of another former Georgia edge rusher, Travon Walker, who, despite not having standout college statistics, possessed the talent. Even though Williams recorded just five sacks this season—partly due to an ankle injury—he has the look and traits to become a significant force in the NFL.”
Jalon Walker, LB, Carolina Panthers, 8th overall
“Carolina allowed 6.0 yards per play and 31.4 points per game, both the worst in the NFL this season. Regardless of any opinions on quarterback Bryce Young’s long-term potential, competing with a defense that concedes that many points is challenging. Walker is versatile, able to play as a traditional off-ball linebacker or as an edge rusher. His game revolves around speed-to-power, and regardless of his position, he can disrupt plays in the backfield. This season, he registered 6.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss, making him a good fit for coordinator Ejiro Evero’s system.”
Malaki Starks, S, Miami Dolphins, 13th overall
“According to ESPN Research, no college defense has had three players selected this early in the same draft year, but Starks could be part of that early trend for Bulldogs. He effectively closes in on the ball and makes plays, recording 67 tackles this season and excelling in space. Starks is adaptable, able to play both as a traditional safety and in the slot. With the Dolphins’ starting safeties Jevon Holland and Jordan Poyer both set to be free agents this offseason, Miami may well look to strengthen their secondary here, although an upgrade on the offensive or defensive line could also be a consideration.”
