Chargers remain unfazed by Khalil Mack’s status, mock draft adds new star edge rusher
Good news for the Los Angeles Chargers: star edge rusher Khalil Mack is not retiring. The bad news, however, is that he’s a free agent, prompting the team to explore other options in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Mack has been a key figure in the Chargers’ pass rush over the past three years, accumulating 31 sacks. But with Mack entering free agency, teams will likely face a hefty price tag to sign him.
Although Mack might continue playing next season, there’s no guarantee he’ll remain with the Chargers. As a result, some mock drafts are predicting that the team will target an edge rusher. Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News has the Chargers selecting Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr. with the 22nd pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Chargers are awaiting Mack’s decision as he approaches free agency and turns 34 in February. With Joey Bosa needing a strong pass-rush partner, Pearce could step in as a potential game-changer, either as a rotational player or Mack’s eventual replacement.
If Mack doesn’t return, selecting Pearce would make sense. Bosa’s future is uncertain, and Mack’s age is a factor. Pearce finished his college career with 19.5 sacks, including 10 in a dominant 2023 season, making him a solid addition to the Chargers’ defense.
