“It’s not fantastic”–Tennessee Basketball In The Midst of Brutal SEC Schedule

Tennessee basketball is facing a tough stretch in their SEC schedule. After a loss to Vanderbilt, the Volunteers are 16-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play, with the next five games set to be against ranked opponents, including three teams in the top 10.

The challenging stretch began with a home win over No. 14 Mississippi State, where the Vols won 68-59, improving to a 4-2 SEC record. Now, Tennessee prepares for an even tougher challenge, starting with a road game at No. 1 Auburn. Auburn, which is 17-1 and 5-0 in SEC play, is considered the best team in the nation, though they will be without star player Johni Broome, a National Player of the Year candidate. Despite his absence, Auburn remains a deep team, and playing at Auburn Arena will still present a major challenge for the Vols.

After facing Auburn, Tennessee returns home to take on No. 9 Kentucky on January 28. Kentucky boasts the second-best offense in the SEC, averaging over 88 points per game, while Tennessee is ranked No. 1 in defense, allowing fewer than 60 points per game. The battle between Kentucky’s high-powered offense and Tennessee’s stingy defense is set to be a highly anticipated matchup.

Tennessee’s next road game is at No. 5 Florida on February 1, where they will face a well-rounded Gators team led by guard Walter Clayton Jr. The matchup between Clayton and Tennessee’s Zakai Zeigler is expected to be a key storyline.

The Vols’ tough stretch concludes on February 5 with a home game against No. 22 Missouri. Although Missouri is ranked the lowest among these teams, the Tigers are second in the SEC standings with a 4-1 record in the conference.

How Tennessee performs during this challenging stretch will be crucial in determining their potential as serious contenders for both the SEC tournament and March Madness.
