The Bills signed the seasoned quarterback shortly before their divisional-round matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, enlisting him to simulate Jackson for the scout team. Thanks to their preparation, the Bills managed to limit Jackson and the formidable Ravens offense, setting up a rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship game, before parting ways with Brown this week.
Bills Return to Three Quarterbacks
On January 22, the Bills announced Brown’s release from the practice squad. The 26-year-old previously served as Jackson’s backup with the Ravens, playing in two games with one start during the 2022 season when Jackson was sidelined with an injury. Brown also had a brief stint with the Bills in the preseason, participating in their final game against the Carolina Panthers.
Bills head coach Sean McDermott noted last week that Brown was instrumental in helping the defense prepare for Jackson in the divisional round.
“He can throw it. He can run it. So it’s a true honest look down in and down out…of some of the things conceptually that Lamar does,” McDermott explained, highlighting Jackson’s unique skills.
The Bills managed to force Jackson into two turnovers during their 27-25 victory over the Ravens, creating an interception and a fumble on consecutive drives in the first half.
With Brown’s departure, the Bills have returned to three quarterbacks on their active roster: Josh Allen as the starter, with veterans Mitch Trubisky and Mike White backing him up.
In addition to releasing Brown, the Bills have made another roster move, adding defensive tackle Eli Ankou back to the practice squad.
Bills Gear Up for New Challenge
Looking ahead, the Bills are set to face another two-time MVP quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, in this week’s AFC championship game. Bills edge rusher Von Miller praised Mahomes, drawing a comparison to NBA legend Kobe Bryant.
“He’s kind of like Kobe [Bryant],” Miller remarked, via NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe. “He’s going to score his shots. We just gotta make a few more plays than him.”
Earlier this season, the Bills defeated Mahomes and the Chiefs, handing them their sole loss of the year before resting their starters in Week 18 and subsequently falling to the Denver Broncos. However, they’ve struggled against the Chiefs in the playoffs, with three losses in the last four seasons.
The Chiefs are aiming for a third consecutive Super Bowl win, which would be an NFL record. Allen acknowledged the significance of the upcoming challenge against Mahomes.
“Obviously Patrick (Mahomes) is one of the greatest to ever play the game, and they’re one of the greatest teams ever assembled,” Allen stated. “Going for a three-peat, and that’s what everyone wants in this league is to have the sustained success that they’ve had.”
