Ashton Woods, a linebacker formerly with the North Carolina Tar Heels, has officially joined the West Virginia Mountaineers, marking their first signing from the transfer portal this offseason. Woods, who played in four games for North Carolina last season, saw limited action but brings significant experience and talent to the Mountaineers.
Woods’ high school career at Walton High School in Georgia was impressive. He totaled 383 tackles, 15 sacks, 36 tackles for loss, six interceptions, and five forced fumbles, showcasing his all-around ability on defense. His stellar play earned him two-time all-state honors and recognition as a two-time region defensive player of the year.
After high school, Woods had a variety of college offers to choose from, including programs like Arkansas, Baylor, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, among others. Ultimately, he decided to play for North Carolina, where he spent the early part of his college career before transferring to West Virginia.
Woods will have four years of eligibility remaining, providing the Mountaineers with an experienced player who has the potential to make an immediate impact. West Virginia is excited to add him to their defensive unit as they look to strengthen their roster heading into the new season.
