The Chicago Bears, under Ben Johnson’s leadership, already have D’Andre Swift as their explosive, playmaking running back. However, in the 2025 free agency, they may look to add a more physical, power back to complement Swift’s speed and agility. This could help address a bigger running back need than many realize.
While Swift is a dynamic talent capable of turning games around, the Bears currently lack a consistent, hard-hitting runner like David Montgomery, who played a crucial role in Ben Johnson’s offense during his time with the Detroit Lions.
Had the Bears re-signed Montgomery in 2023, their running back situation would look much different. However, with Montgomery gone, Chicago finds itself in need of a true power back.
Looking ahead to the 2025 offseason, the Bears could aim to strengthen their backfield with someone who offers more than what they’ve gotten from 2023 fourth-round pick Roschon Johnson, whose performance has fallen short of expectations. Johnson, initially seen as a reliable bruiser, has been decent in goal-line situations but has yet to prove himself as more than a backup option.
To fill this gap, the Bears should consider signing Javonte Williams, the Denver Broncos running back set to hit free agency. Despite a promising rookie season where he rushed for over 900 yards and four touchdowns, Williams’ career took a hit after a serious knee injury that sidelined him for much of the 2022 season. Though he’s struggled to return to his previous form, part of his decline can be attributed to Denver’s offensive scheme under Sean Payton, which emphasized a running-back-by-committee approach that didn’t suit Williams’ style of play.
Williams’ struggles in recent years have led to a dip in his market value, making him a potential bargain for teams like the Bears, who have ample cap space. A one-year prove-it deal would give Williams the fresh start he needs, and at just 25 years old, he still has a lot to offer. At the very least, he would be an upgrade over Roschon Johnson in Chicago’s power-running game, and at best, he could take on a full-time role, possibly even replacing Swift as the primary back in Ben Johnson’s offense.

While some Bears fans are hoping the team will target Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty in the first round of the 2025 draft, the team cannot afford to use its top picks on anything other than improving the offensive and defensive lines. With a deep running back class in the 2025 draft, Chicago could still find a solid prospect later on. However, if Williams’ free-agent market is quieter than expected, the Bears would be wise to make a move for him.
