The trick play might not have helped the Commanders in the end, but it certainly made Kansas State fans smile.
Kansas State fans who aren’t fans of the Kansas City Chiefs were cheering this weekend as one of their former players made a significant play. Ben Sinnott, a former tight end, hasn’t had much playing time this season with the Washington Commanders, as a rookie on a team filled with talent, particularly at the tight end position.
Sinnott was listed as the third-string tight end behind the legendary Zach Ertz and John Bates. While Ertz and Bates have been the primary targets this season from rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, Sinnott managed to catch a few passes as well.
In the 2024 season, Sinnott was targeted five times and caught all of those passes for a total of 28 yards. Unfortunately, he also had two fumbles, which may have limited his playing time. However, in the NFC Championship game, the former Wildcat made a remarkable play that delighted Kansas State fans.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn is known for his bold decisions, going for it on fourth down more than 60% of the time—more than any other NFL team. When the Commanders needed a spark, Quinn seemed poised to give the ball back to the Philadelphia Eagles but instead called a trick play for Sinnott, which was executed flawlessly.

Commanders punter Tress Way delivered a flawless pass to Sinnott, who made the catch to convert a crucial first down during a fake punt play. Every Kansas State fan tuning in likely leaped out of their seats at the sight of Sinnott making such a significant play in a high-stakes game.
This moment could elevate Sinnott’s role as he heads into the 2025 season, particularly with Ertz’s one-year contract nearing its conclusion. Unfortunately, the Commanders lost to the Eagles 55-23, bringing an end to Sinnott’s rookie season.
