Bill Belichick Secures Commitment from Star QB Who Will Also Play Lacrosse at UNC

Gary Merrill, a five-star recruit who is also committed to play lacrosse at the University of North Carolina, has chosen to join the Tar Heels as a two-sport athlete.

Merrill confirmed his decision on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday night, expressing his excitement to play both football and lacrosse for UNC.

“UNC Football and Lacrosse,” Merrill wrote. “Extremely grateful for the opportunity to play football and lacrosse at the University of North Carolina. Go Heels! Ready to get to work.”

In addition to his lacrosse skills as a top-ranked midfielder, Merrill excelled as a quarterback at Saint Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, N.Y. During his senior year, he threw for 1,762 yards and 19 touchdowns, and rushed for another 1,955 yards with 32 touchdowns. He was named New York’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a QB.

Since being introduced as UNC’s head coach on December 12, Belichick has quickly made his mark on recruiting, adding up to 21 new athletes to the team through both high school recruits and the transfer portal, as announced earlier this month.
