Zach Ertz Will Not Return to the Commanders

The Washington Commanders face a significant offseason ahead with 33 free agents heading into 2025, and one notable name among them is Zach Ertz.

TWSN’s Anthony Miller analyzed three Commanders players who are unlikely to return, including Ertz. In his breakdown, Miller wrote:

“While this may come as a surprise, especially given that Ertz became Daniels’ second-most trusted target both during the regular season and playoffs, the veteran tight end had his best performance since 2019 as the team’s primary tight end. Ertz recorded 66 catches for 654 yards and seven touchdowns, playing in every regular-season game. He also led the Commanders in postseason receptions (18), totaling 155 yards and a touchdown across three playoff games.

The reason for moving on from Ertz is largely due to his age. As he continues to play, his production will likely decline, and although he has no plans to retire soon, Washington would be better off looking for a younger tight end who can contribute more consistently, both as a blocker and pass-catcher for Daniels.”

While Miller’s analysis has merit, this perspective on Ertz may not fully hold up. The Commanders could likely re-sign Ertz on a modest deal, especially given his expressed enjoyment of playing with Kliff Kingsbury and Jayden Daniels. It would be a bigger setback for Ertz to have to adjust to an entirely new system next season.

Even if it’s just for one or two years, such a deal would benefit both parties. It would also allow Washington to continue developing young talent like Ben Sinnott, who could be integrated into the offense alongside Ertz in two-tight end sets.
