Cooper Kupp to Join Detroit Lions After Rams Release
Following the Los Angeles Rams’ playoff exit at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles, the future of several key players, including star receiver Cooper Kupp, is up in the air. Speculation around Kupp’s status with the team has increased, with some believing his time in L.A. may be over.
In the wake of the loss, Kupp addressed the uncertainty surrounding his future, saying, “Who knows what is going to happen? A lot of stuff is out of my control,” according to The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue. “We’ll see what it’s going to be. There was obviously stuff going on early in the season, and we’ll see. I don’t have any clarity on what that’s gonna look like. Obviously, I would love to be in L.A., but I don’t know what that’s going to look like.”
Kupp, who will turn 32 in June, had a tough 2024 season, plagued by injuries. He averaged just 59.2 receiving yards per game, his lowest since 2017, finishing with 710 total yards. Given his contract, a trade might be difficult, but if the Rams release him, the Detroit Lions could be the perfect landing spot.
Detroit, reeling from their own playoff loss to the Washington Commanders and the departures of both their offensive and defensive coordinators, is in a tricky position. Though Jared Goff is getting older, the team extended his contract last offseason. With Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams already at receiver, adding Kupp would give Goff a reliable third target in high-pressure situations.
For Kupp, joining the Lions could offer the best chance to finish his career on a high note, with a legitimate shot at another Super Bowl victory.
