Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy is set to have his contract reworked.
The final step in Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy’s contract negotiations is scheduled for Friday.
The revised contract, which was renegotiated in early December, is set to be presented for approval to the Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents during their regular meeting at the Oklahoma State student union, as first reported by Scott Wright of The Oklahoman.
On December 7, Gundy agreed to the amended contract after discussions with Oklahoma State President Kayse Shrum and Athletic Director Chad Weiberg. The new terms reportedly include a $1 million annual salary reduction, the elimination of the yearly rollover extension, and a reduction in the contract’s total buyout.
The head coach, now entering his 21st season in charge, is set to earn $6.75 million annually on a four-year contract. The updated contract won’t be made public until it receives final approval from the board and is processed by the open records department.
During the previous Board of Regents meeting on December 6, Gundy’s role as head coach was addressed following a 3-9 season that had just concluded. After the meeting, Gundy, Shrum, and Weiberg spent roughly 24 hours negotiating and discussing the future of Oklahoma State football.
On December 7, the athletic department confirmed that Gundy would return as head coach for the 2025 season following a revision of his contract.
“We didn’t achieve what we hoped for this past season,” said Weiberg at a press conference last week. “But that follows 19 years of exceptional football and a standard he’s established for the program. While we’re not happy with how this season went, it shouldn’t overshadow the success of the previous 18 or 19 years. The focus now is on returning to that level of performance.”
As of the end of the 2024 season, Gundy holds a head coaching record of 169-88 and has won over 100 Big 12 games. He has been named Big 12 Coach of the Year three times (2010, 2021, 2023), earned the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award, and was named Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year in 2011. The 2024 season marked just his second losing season in his career.
“I believe the fans will be really excited about Oklahoma State football,” Gundy said last week. “My energy and commitment to Oklahoma State and its football program grow stronger every year. I sometimes think there might come a point when I start to tire, but as I’ve said before, I still wake up in the middle of the night thinking about football.”
