‘Remarkable’ Arizona State Wonderkid one of best defensive players in college basketball

Jayden Quaintance, a 17-year-old freshman at Arizona State, has quickly emerged as one of the top defensive players in college basketball. Despite being the youngest player in the sport, Quaintance leads all Power 5 players with an impressive 3.0 blocks per game, ranking fourth in the nation overall, behind three 7-foot players from smaller schools.

Standing 6-foot-9 with a remarkable 7-foot-3 wingspan, the five-star freshman has been a force on the defensive end, recording eight games with four or more blocks, including back-to-back performances with five blocks against UCF and Cincinnati.

Quaintance’s rare defensive versatility has drawn significant attention from NBA scouts. With his athleticism, length, and speed, he is capable of guarding all five positions on the floor. His exceptional defensive potential has made him a highlight in the scouting world.

Through 19 games this season, Quaintance is averaging 10.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks. Although he won’t be eligible for the NBA draft until 2026, as he won’t turn 18 until July, his future in the league looks promising. In the latest 2026 NBA mock draft by NBADraft.net, Quaintance is projected to be selected 10th overall by the Golden State Warriors.

However, Quaintance’s availability for Arizona State’s upcoming rivalry game against Arizona is uncertain. He injured his ankle during a loss to Iowa State on Saturday and missed the Sun Devils’ win over Colorado on Tuesday. Coach Bobby Hurley hopes to have him back for the game on Saturday, but it will likely be a game-time decision.

If Quaintance plays, fans can expect to see a matchup featuring several future NBA players. Arizona State, with Quaintance and shooting guard Joson Sanon, and Arizona, boasting potential pros like Carter Bryant, Henri Veesaar, Jaden Bradley, and KJ Bradley, will certainly attract plenty of NBA scouts to Desert Financial Arena.
