New Las Vegas Raiders general manager John Spytek has a strong track record of identifying pass-catching talent, and Raider Nation is hopeful he can bring that same success to the Raiders.
This offseason, the Raiders must focus on adding talent to their offense, particularly at wide receiver. Fortunately, Spytek may be the perfect person for the job. Before joining the Raiders, Spytek spent years as the assistant general manager for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played a key role in building one of the NFL’s top passing offenses. During his time in Tampa, Spytek helped bring in players like Chris Godwin, Trey Palmer, and Jalen McMillan, all of whom contributed to the Buccaneers’ third-ranked passing attack.
The Raiders need to make significant improvements at wide receiver. Whether they sign free agents to complement tight end Brock Bowers or select rookies in the 2025 NFL Draft, adding long-term, foundational pass-catchers should be a top priority for Spytek. His history of spotting talent at the receiver position is a promising sign for the Raiders.
Currently, Jakobi Meyers is the Raiders’ top wide receiver. While he’s been productive during his two seasons in Las Vegas, Meyers is in the final year of his contract. Though he’s a reliable contributor, he may be better suited as a high-end WR2 rather than a dominant top receiver. For the Raiders to reach their offensive potential, they need a more dynamic, game-changing option at receiver.
What makes Spytek’s past success particularly exciting is that players like Godwin, Palmer, and McMillan were all drafted outside the first round. Spytek has proven that valuable receivers can be found beyond the early picks, where many teams tend to overvalue pass-catchers.
The Raiders could look to the second or third rounds of the draft to find players who fit the offensive system head coach Pete Carroll wants to run. The team has struggled with consistency in its passing game in recent years, whether due to quarterback or receiver play—or both. While adding a quarterback should be the top priority, giving that quarterback a solid group of receivers is equally important.
Spytek has a proven eye for wide receiver talent, and the Raiders must take advantage of his expertise to upgrade their offense.
