The Los Angeles Chargers’ chances of signing top free-agent wide receiver Tee Higgins are looking slimmer. The team has a need at receiver, and while rookie Ladd McConkey, drafted early in the second round, has exceeded expectations, fans were hoping the Chargers would be in strong contention for Higgins.

Despite battling through some soft tissue injuries and missing a few games, Higgins showcased why he’s considered the top wide receiver in free agency — possibly even the best overall player available, regardless of position.

However, in a recent Bleacher Report article, Kristopher Knox made a compelling case for Higgins joining an AFC rival of the Chargers: the New England Patriots.

Dan Orlovsky on the Chargers WR room:

"It's Ladd McConkey and then who?

That when you kind of can get caught looking into the future and go, Tee Higgins?"

Knox highlighted that New England, with a league-high $125 million in cap space, is in a strong position to outbid any competition for Higgins. He also pointed out that adding Higgins would be a significant move for the Patriots, who have struggled with a weak receiving corps, and would provide new head coach Mike Vrabel with a valuable asset.

This prediction may be disappointing for Chargers fans, especially since the Patriots were the team that moved up in last year’s draft to select McConkey, whom the Chargers had targeted.
