Rich Dauer, a former coach for the Houston Astros, has passed away at the age of 72. Dauer played an important role in the Astros’ historic 2017 World Series victory, which marked the franchise’s first-ever championship. This triumph came after the team had endured a tough period from 2011 to 2013, when they were among the worst in Major League Baseball.

Before his time with the Astros, Dauer had a distinguished playing career. He was the starting second baseman for the Baltimore Orioles’ 1983 World Series-winning team. After retiring from playing in 1985, he quickly transitioned into coaching, beginning as the manager of a minor league affiliate in 1987 and moving up to Major League coaching staffs in 1990.

Dauer’s coaching journey led him to meet A.J. Hinch. In 2001, Dauer was the third base coach for the Kansas City Royals, where he worked alongside Hinch, who was then the team’s catcher. This connection ultimately led to Hinch hiring Dauer to his staff when he became the Astros’ manager in 2015. Together, they made history in 2017, achieving the Astros’ first World Series title.

We mourn the passing of Orioles Hall of Fame second baseman Rich Dauer, who spent his entire 10-year career with the O’s.

During the victory parade that followed, Dauer suffered a medical emergency, which required quick action from coaches, staff, and EMTs to save his life. He later recovered and returned to the ballpark for the 2018 home opener, where he threw out the first pitch on the day the championship banner was raised.

Dauer spent his entire 10-year playing career with the Orioles. Although he never made an All-Star Game or won individual accolades, he played a key role in helping the Orioles capture their third World Series title in 1983. He was later inducted into the Orioles’ Hall of Fame.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
