Michigan Football Working to Flip Four-Star Cornerback from Notre Dame

Michigan’s football coaching staff has been busy on the recruiting trail lately, making in-home visits with high school prospects across the country.

During a recent trip to Tennessee, U-M defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan met with Chaston Smith, a four-star cornerback from Chattanooga’s McCallie School. Smith, who committed to Notre Dame on December 1, remains a target for the Wolverines despite his pledge to the Fighting Irish.

Ranked as the No. 258 overall prospect, No. 16 cornerback, and No. 7 player from Tennessee in the 2026 recruiting class according to On3’s Industry Ranking, Smith’s recruiting profile may be undervalued. At 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, he has received offers from 35 FBS programs, including top schools like Alabama, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, Michigan, and Notre Dame.

Flipping Smith from Notre Dame won’t be easy. He originally committed to the Irish, choosing them over Clemson, Texas A&M, South Carolina, and Indiana, and Notre Dame is expected to work hard to keep him in their 2026 class.

Currently, Michigan has two players committed to its 2026 class: four-star defensive back Brody Jennings and three-star wide receiver Jaylen Pile. The Wolverines’ class ranks 39th nationally and 13th out of 18 Big Ten schools at this early stage of the cycle.
