Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day is on the lookout for three new assistants as the 2025 college football season approaches. The Buckeyes have been working hard to retain stars like Jeremiah Smith, who are considering entering the transfer portal amidst pressure from top rival programs. Additionally, they are set to lose significant players such as Jack Sawyer, Will Howard, Quinshon Judkins, and TreVeyon Henderson to the 2025 NFL draft.
Alongside this roster turnover, Day has seen three assistants depart his staff this offseason, which includes both the offensive and defensive coordinators. The latest to leave is offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who is headed to the NFL to join Pete Carroll’s new staff with the Las Vegas Raiders. According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Kelly’s new contract with the Raiders has him earning an average salary of $ 6 million—a figure that surpasses what many college football head coaches make.

“The @Raiders informed candidates during their search that they were making a substantial investment with financial backing from the new owners,” Breer mentioned in a Sunday post on X. “And there it is—Chip Kelly was attracted to Las Vegas with a contract averaging $ 6 million annually, according to sources. Kelly is now the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL.”

Ohio State also saw former defensive coordinator Jim Knowles join the Penn State Nittany Lions. Furthermore, former offensive line coach Justin Frye accepted a similar position with the Arizona Cardinals. Kelly was instrumental in boosting the Buckeyes’ offense during their College Football Playoff journey. The silver lining is that Ohio State has an abundance of playmakers for the next offensive coordinator to work with.
