The Washington Nationals are currently in early-stage discussions to bring back veteran pitcher Kyle Finnegan, a move that could potentially strengthen their bullpen. Despite the team non-tendering Finnegan’s contract earlier this offseason, the Nationals appear to be exploring the possibility of reuniting with their All-Star closer from last season.
Chad Jennings of The Athletic recently predicted this surprising development. He noted that although Finnegan has his limitations, the Nationals have not been able to adequately replace him in their bullpen this offseason. Given the team’s ongoing need for bullpen help, Jennings believes that bringing Finnegan back would be the most logical way to improve the relief pitching staff.
This potential reunion would mark a significant shift in the Nationals’ offseason strategy. Finnegan, who has been a reliable presence in Washington’s bullpen, was non-tendered as the team looked to trim payroll and explore other roster options. However, with other moves not fully addressing the bullpen’s weaknesses, it seems the Nationals might be circling back to their former closer, whose market has been relatively quiet so far this offseason.
The Nationals’ interest in Finnegan could also be seen as a cost-saving measure. With fewer teams appearing to show interest in the pitcher, Finnegan might be available at a more affordable price than initially anticipated. Bringing him back would allow the Nationals to solidify their bullpen without committing significant financial resources to other free-agent pitchers who may command higher salaries.
While this turn of events might come as a surprise to many, the Nationals are clearly weighing their options carefully as they try to field a competitive team in the coming season. Finnegan’s return could offer stability to a bullpen that struggled at times last season, and his familiarity with the team and pitching staff could help him hit the ground running. If the negotiations proceed as expected, Finnegan’s return could provide a much-needed boost for Washington as they continue to rebuild their roster.
