South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley has stated that the team is now in “unfamiliar territory” after their first regular season conference loss in three years. The Gamecocks were defeated by the Texas Longhorns 66-62, marking their second loss of the season as they approach the final stretch of their conference schedule.
South Carolina rarely loses, especially against conference rivals, so Staley was asked about the setback following the game. “It’s unfamiliar territory for us,” Staley remarked. “This is the first game we’ve lost in two years, I think. The law of averages says at some point, somebody’s gonna get you.”
Earlier in the season, the Gamecocks had a remarkable winning streak of over 10 games, setting a program record for the most consecutive double-digit victories. South Carolina has been dominant, much like last season, and remains in a strong position to contend for another title later this year.
“I’m just glad they didn’t get us where we can’t survive,” Staley said. “We still control our own destiny. We do have to look around a little bit and hope somebody knocks Texas or LSU off so we control it for the rest of the way.”
The Gamecocks will finish their season with home games against Florida, UConn, and Arkansas, followed by road games against Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, and a final home game against Kentucky.
