The Chicago Cubs are considering signing former New York Mets infielder Justin Turner if they are unable to land their top target, Alex Bregman. Turner, who last played for the Mets over a decade ago, has had a remarkable career turnaround since leaving New York.
After being claimed off waivers by the Mets from the Baltimore Orioles in 2010, Turner spent a brief time in the majors but didn’t perform well, with a .265/.326/.370 batting line in 301 games. After becoming a free agent in 2013, he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and experienced a career revival.

From 2014 onward, Turner posted impressive numbers, hitting .290/.369/.476 with 190 home runs and 725 RBI across 1,360 games. He earned two All-Star selections and finished in the top 20 in NL MVP voting twice. Now nearing 40, Turner remains a solid hitter and could serve as a designated hitter for a contending team.
According to a report from The Athletic, the Cubs are eyeing Turner as a backup plan in case Bregman signs with another team. The Cubs have already had a successful offseason, adding star outfielder Kyle Tucker and closer Ryan Pressly, as well as trading away Cody Bellinger’s large contract.
Bregman would be a major addition to the Cubs’ lineup, bolstering their chances in the National League Central. Turner would be a less exciting option offensively, but still capable, though he would be a downgrade defensively if played at third base.
Meanwhile, the Mets may have missed an opportunity to bring Turner back for a final stint in New York, which could have helped their payroll. The veteran’s market is heating up as the start of spring training approaches.
