Mavericks Remove Fan for Protesting Luka Doncic Trade During Kings Game
The Dallas Mavericks are increasingly distancing themselves from their fanbase following the unexpected trade of Luka Doncic. The trade, which sent their star player to the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this month, caused a stir among fans, and the uproar remains strong more than a week later. The spotlight remains on Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison and team governor Patrick Dumont, who are facing the brunt of the backlash.
Harrison has become a focal point of the anger after it was revealed that he initiated the trade talks by reaching out to Lakers GM Rob Pelinka. This move has led to hundreds of fans canceling their season tickets and television subscriptions, with some even taking their protests to the American Airlines Center.
During a recent game on Monday night, where the Mavericks suffered a 129-128 overtime loss to the Sacramento Kings, the arena staff appeared extra cautious about which fans they showed on the video board. However, during the second half, a karaoke cam moment showed fans singing along to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” One fan took the opportunity to mouth “fire Nico” as the lyrics “I need a man who’ll take a chance” played in the background. The camera quickly shifted away, but the message had already been sent.
This bold protest clearly wasn’t appreciated by the Mavericks, and security soon escorted the fan out of the arena. As the fallout continues, the Mavericks’ management risks further alienating their fanbase. With Anthony Davis sidelined due to injury, the call to “fire Nico” could become more than just a chant if the situation worsens.
