With less than a month remaining until the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline, many believe the Detroit Red Wings will be buyers following the firing of Derek Lalonde and the hiring of Todd McLellan. However, a recent article by Todd Matthews of Octopus Thrower suggests that the Red Wings should also consider trading away a few players.
1 – Vladimir Tarasenko
Disappointing Season: Despite his proven track record, Tarasenko has underperformed this season, managing just 7 goals and 22 points in 53 games—far below expectations for the Red Wings.
Trade Value: Despite his struggles, Tarasenko remains an attractive option for playoff-bound teams or contenders seeking an offensive boost, making him a likely trade candidate.
Potential Return: Moving Tarasenko could bring the Red Wings valuable assets, such as high-end prospects or draft picks, to aid their long-term rebuilding efforts.
2 – Jonatan Berggren
Lackluster Production: While he has shown some recent improvement, Berggren has only 9 goals and 17 points in 53 games, failing to take a significant step forward from his 2022-23 season (15 goals, 28 points).
Even-Strength Inefficiency: The Red Wings have scored at just a 6.7% rate when Berggren is on the ice at even strength, indicating his minimal impact in critical moments.

3 – Justin Holl
Minimal Contribution: Holl has struggled to make an impact since joining the Red Wings, recording only one goal and five points in 47 games, making him a prime trade candidate.
Veteran Presence: Despite his limited production, Holl’s experience and defensive reliability could make him valuable to teams in need of leadership and steady ice time.
