A Surprising Potential Destination for Rams’ Matthew Stafford
The Los Angeles Rams are reportedly working on bringing quarterback Matthew Stafford back, but if they decide to part ways with the veteran, they could have an intriguing trade partner.
The Rams and Stafford have important decisions to make this offseason. While it seems unlikely that Stafford will retire, there is still a chance the Rams could move on from him. If that happens, several teams would likely show interest in acquiring the quarterback’s services.
CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani explored which NFL teams could be the best fit for Stafford in a potential trade, suggesting an interesting possibility for the Rams. Dajani pointed out that a return to the NFC North could be on the table, noting the uncertainty surrounding the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation this offseason.
“Many are expecting Darnold to return in 2025, but what if another team offers him more money? If Darnold leaves, would the Vikings immediately hand the starting job to J.J. McCarthy? Or could they acquire another veteran?” Dajani said.
Dajani highlighted that Minnesota’s roster is loaded with talent that Stafford could elevate, particularly their impressive group of pass catchers. With the potential departure of veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp, the Rams don’t have as many reliable options on offense.
“Stafford and Kevin O’Connell are already familiar with each other, having won a Super Bowl together with the Rams in 2022,” Dajani noted. “Who wouldn’t want to see Stafford end his NFL career throwing to Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson?” (Though Lions fans might feel differently).
The Vikings’ strong roster, on both offense and defense, could be an ideal situation for Stafford. While the Rams beat Minnesota twice this season, those wins came with Stafford leading the charge. A trade to the Vikings would be a positive move for Stafford, as it would reunite him with a familiar division and a talented roster.
