Chicago Bears legend Tom Waddle shared a bold perspective on Keenan Allen’s future with the team, suggesting that the star wide receiver may not fit into the Bears’ long-term plans.
When Chicago acquired Allen a little over a year ago, it seemed like a perfect move to strengthen their receiving corps and provide their future franchise quarterback with ample weapons. Allen had a solid 2024 season, posting 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games. However, his production dropped significantly compared to his standout 2023 season with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he recorded 38 fewer catches and nearly 500 fewer yards.
At 33 years old, Allen appeared slower and unlikely to regain his former speed. Set to become a free agent in March, many believe the Bears won’t re-sign him, and Waddle agrees, suggesting that Allen should move on from Chicago.
Appearing on the Bears Banter Podcast, Waddle explained that Allen’s departure might be a good move for the team, pointing to the struggles with tight ends like Cole Kmet and Caleb, which he attributes to overreliance on Allen in the previous season. While he acknowledged Allen’s impressive career, Waddle doesn’t believe keeping him is the best path forward.
Waddle also highlighted how the Bears, under head coach Ben Johnson, are likely shifting towards a faster-paced offense, which doesn’t align with Allen’s playing style. Despite his age, Allen will likely still attract interest from teams in need of a reliable veteran, such as the Washington Commanders, Kansas City Chiefs, and Las Vegas Raiders, who could offer him a lucrative deal.
Given his age and declining production, Waddle doubts the Bears will be willing to pay Allen’s projected two-year, $22.2 million contract. Instead, he believes Allen’s departure could open the door for increased targets for Kmet and promising second-year receiver Rome Odunze, whose potential could greatly benefit from more opportunities.
