Former Temple football head coach added to Penn State staff

Penn State has strengthened its coaching staff with the addition of former Temple head coach Stanley Drayton as the new running backs coach.

“Stan Drayton brings decades of experience coaching running backs at the highest levels to our program,” head coach James Franklin said in a statement on the team’s official website. “He is a valuable addition to our staff. His background as a head coach and his work with elite running backs throughout his career will be a tremendous asset to our running backs room. I’m thrilled to welcome Stan and his family—his wife, Monique, and daughters, Amari and Anaya—to Happy Valley.”

Drayton arrives at Penn State after spending nearly three seasons leading the Temple program. He was dismissed with two games left in the season, finishing his tenure with a 9-25 record.

Although Drayton’s time at Temple was rocky, his extensive coaching background spans both college football and the NFL. He previously worked as the Chicago Bears’ running backs coach from 2015-2016 and held an assistant coaching role with the Green Bay Packers from 2001-2003.

“I am excited and honored to be joining this elite organization led by Coach Franklin,” Drayton said. “I have immense respect for the culture and program he has built here. Penn State has a storied tradition of standout running backs and a very talented group right now. I’m eager for this opportunity and can’t wait to get started.”

With a 32-year coaching career, including 25 years dedicated to running backs, Drayton’s track record speaks for itself. His resume boasts seven 1,000-yard rushers, five NFL Draft selections, and two All-Americans. Among the standout players he has mentored are Bijan Robinson, Ezekiel Elliott, and Brian Westbrook.
