Maryland football has recently added a couple of new coaches, including offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton and special teams coordinator Andre Powell. However, the Terrapins are also experiencing coaching departures. Defensive coordinator Brian Williams is reportedly leaving for Jacksonville State, and he isn’t the only one. According to Football Scoop, co-offensive coordinator and associate head coach Kevin Sumlin is stepping down from his on-field role.
Sumlin, who just wrapped up his second season with Mike Locksley’s staff, has decided to step away from coaching on the field. At 60 years old, Sumlin could remain with the program in an off-field position, as he was also serving as the tight ends coach for the 2023-24 season.
The Alabama native has accumulated 95 career wins as an FBS head coach. Sumlin has the option to continue his coaching career or choose retirement. His past contracts include a $30 million deal for his time at Texas A&M, as well as a lucrative agreement with Arizona.
Sumlin gained recognition for his successful tenure at Texas A&M, particularly for his recruiting prowess. It remains to be seen how this development will impact Maryland or whether Sumlin will remain involved with the program in some way.
