The New York Giants are in urgent need of a quarterback upgrade.
As it turns out, veteran QB Matthew Stafford is looking for a contract extension with the Los Angeles Rams, but if a deal can’t be reached, he may become available for trade.
Though acquiring a player like Stafford may seem appealing to Giants fans, retired NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason warns the team to be careful.
“It’s great, and I know the team wants to win and he’s a great player. But he’s a 37-year-old quarterback looking for an extension,” he shared on WFAN. “Does it really make sense?”
After spending his first 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions, Stafford was traded to the Rams in a major shake-up. He led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory in his first season and has reached the playoffs in two of the three years since.
However, Stafford comes with a hefty price tag, and his age makes him a potential risk.
“He’s a really good player, but you’re looking at a 37-year-old quarterback who’ll cost you over $40 million a year, which is what it’ll take,” Boomer added.
“As much as I understand why the Giants might consider it, you’re talking about older players and committing a lot of money.”
With limited cap space, Giants GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll will need to carefully weigh the pros and cons of pursuing Stafford, deciding whether it’s worth the investment or better to allocate resources elsewhere.
