There’s speculation that the New Orleans Saints could trade Derek Carr, the $150 million four-time Pro Bowler, back to his former team, the Las Vegas Raiders. The NFL quarterback market is expected to be busy this offseason, and the Saints are faced with a key decision about Carr’s future with the team.
Two years ago, the Saints signed Carr to a four-year, $150 million contract after the Las Vegas Raiders released him. While Carr has played decently, the Saints have struggled, finishing at the bottom of the NFC South. Now entering his age-34 season, Carr’s future with New Orleans is uncertain. The Saints must decide whether to give him another chance to start under new head coach Kellen Moore or cut ties and search for their next quarterback.
Seth Trachtman of Yardbarker predicts that the Saints will trade Carr back to the Raiders this offseason to clear cap space. Carr, who had a strong connection with the Raiders before being released by coach Josh McDaniels, could be a fit with Las Vegas under new head coach Pete Carroll, who is looking for a quarterback.
However, the trade may need to wait until after June 1, as Carr carries a $51 million dead cap hit for the 2025 season, which would drop to $11 million if traded after that date. Despite a 5-5 record as a starter last season, Carr has shown he still has value, making four Pro Bowls with the Raiders. Las Vegas, though, hasn’t fared well in his absence. The question remains whether any team, including the Raiders, is willing to trade for Carr, and we won’t know until a trade is made—or not.
