The North Carolina Tar Heels have significantly underperformed this season in college basketball for 2024-25. With the regular season nearing its conclusion, the Tar Heels sit at a 15-11 record, placing them in 6th position in the ACC. Heading into Wednesday night’s rivalry game against the NC State Wolfpack, Hubert Davis and his team have lost five out of their last eight matches.

After guiding the Tar Heels to the NCAA Tournament national championship game in his inaugural season as head coach, Davis faced disappointment the following year when the team, ranked No. 1 in preseason, failed to qualify for the tournament. Last year, North Carolina, again a No. 1 seed, was eliminated in the Sweet Sixteen. Now, the program risks missing the NCAA Tournament once more. This inconsistency has raised doubts about Davis’ leadership abilities moving forward, with criticism intensifying during this disappointing season.

Legendary UNC head coach Roy Williams recently defended Hubert Davis against critics, asserting that he is still the right choice for the position. “He’s the right person for the job. It makes me cringe to hear the way people are talking… We’ve faced some challenges this year… But I would love for things to turn around so I can look at all those naysayers and tell them to be quiet,” Williams remarked during his appearance on “The Zach Gelb Show.”
