The Carolina Panthers are focusing heavily on defense this offseason, with a need for improvements across the board. In the latest mock draft, Daniel Jeremiah addresses this by selecting University of Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker, a significant upgrade for the team’s defense.
In his previous mock, Jeremiah aimed to give quarterback Bryce Young more support by selecting Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan. However, in this updated version, the focus shifts to a much-needed defensive addition. Walker, a versatile and promising player, is seen as an ideal fit for the Panthers’ defense.
Jeremiah notes, “The Panthers have needs all over the defensive side of the ball,” and suggests they could consider trading down if another team wants to move up. If they stick with the No. 7 pick, Walker would be a dynamic addition, offering great potential as a pass rusher.
Walker had an outstanding 2024 season, winning the Butkus Award and finishing with 60 tackles, 6.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and two pass deflections.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein also has high praise for Walker, describing him as a “hybrid” player who excels both as an edge rusher and linebacker. While still refining his skills as an off-ball linebacker, his athleticism and burst make him a threat on passing downs. Zierlein believes Walker’s most valuable role will likely be as an early-down linebacker who can rush the edge or blitz.
The Panthers’ defense struggled in 2024, ranking among the worst in sacks with just 32. Their inability to pressure quarterbacks, having posted only 27 sacks the year before, highlights the need for a player like Walker. Adding him would bring a much-needed boost to a defense in desperate need of improvement.
