Nebraska announced on Tuesday that it has extended running backs coach EJ Barthel’s contract for an additional two years, based on contract details released by the university.
The new agreement increases Barthel’s salary from 293,550to 450,000, starting on February 1, and will remain in effect until January 31, 2027. His previous contract was set to expire at the end of January.
Barthel is one of the few remaining hires from Matt Rhule’s original staff and has been coaching the running backs for the past two seasons in Lincoln. He has been considered for open running backs coaching positions at both Penn State, where he previously worked under James Franklin, and Texas, which is still looking to fill its full-time running backs coach position.
Barthel previously served as the running backs coach at UConn and has now rejoined Rhule in Lincoln. He worked alongside Rhule at both the Carolina Panthers and Temple. A native of New Jersey, Barthel played running back at Rutgers for three seasons from 2003 to 2005, then transferred to UMass where he played for two more seasons in 2006 and 2007.
