CBS Sports is urging the Indianapolis Colts to re-sign veteran center Ryan Kelly to help support third-year quarterback Anthony Richardson’s development in 2025. While the Colts have several areas to address, particularly through free agency, some players will be let go to free up cap space for more pressing needs.
Kelly, a nine-year team veteran and captain, is one of those players who, according to CBS Sports, should be re-signed. With Richardson needing protection and more pass-catchers around him, retaining Kelly would help solidify the offensive line. While the Colts are also focused on improving their tight end position and adding weapons for Richardson, Jeff Kerr from CBS Sports believes Kelly’s experience is invaluable for keeping the offensive line stable.
However, there’s also the matter of second-year player Tanor Bortolini, who performed well filling in for Kelly during his injuries in 2024. While Bortolini showed some rookie struggles, he allowed no sacks, just one penalty, and seven pressures. With Kelly battling injuries—missing seven games in 2024 and three in 2023—investing in Bortolini’s development could be a better long-term solution.
Kerr also pointed out the underperformance of the Colts’ tight ends, with Mo Alie-Cox, Kylen Granson, Will Mallory, and Drew Ogletree collectively totaling only 39 receptions and two touchdowns. With Alie-Cox and Granson potentially leaving in free agency, the Colts should consider signing a veteran tight end and drafting one as well.
The future of the franchise depends on Richardson’s growth under head coach Shane Steichen. As the Colts make tough decisions about players with expiring contracts, including Kelly, Alie-Cox, and Granson, their choices will have a significant impact on Richardson’s progress and the team’s overall success in 2025. If they fail to make the right moves, the consequences for Richardson, Steichen, and GM Chris Ballard could be severe.
