As the offseason approached, former 5-star recruit Julian Sayin seemed poised to be the frontrunner to take over as the starting quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes in the 2025 season. With national champion quarterback Will Howard declaring for the NFL draft and Devin Brown and Air Noland from the championship team entering the transfer portal, Sayin appeared to have a clear path. However, he is set to face competition this summer, and he may not even be the leading candidate for the Ohio State quarterback position.
Bleacher Report highlighted Tavien St. Clair as one of the incoming 2025 recruits who could potentially start as a freshman. The report noted that St. Clair’s adaptation period will be vital for his chances, stating, “Spring practice will present a significant jump in competition for the Ohio native. It’s possible the Buckeyes view him as someone who needs time to develop behind the scenes.” Nevertheless, until that scenario becomes a reality, St. Clair is still in the mix as a contender to lead Ohio State in its pursuit of a repeat title.
247Sports ranks St. Clair as the No. 3 quarterback recruit for the 2025 class and lists him as the seventh-best overall prospect according to their composite rankings.

However, Sayin is no pushover. 247Sports has him ranked as the No. 3 quarterback prospect in the 2024 class. He initially committed to Alabama but moved to Ohio State after Nick Saban announced his retirement. During his freshman season, Sayin threw for 84 yards and one touchdown, completing five of his 12 passing attempts over four games.
