Cleveland Cavaliers Officially Sign Veteran Forward Javonte Green
The Cleveland Cavaliers have officially added veteran forward Javonte Green to their roster, strengthening their depth ahead of the upcoming playoff push. Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman made the announcement on Sunday morning after reports emerged Thursday night that Green had agreed to sign with the team following a buyout with the New Orleans Pelicans.
Now a member of the Cavaliers, Green will wear No. 8 as the team prepares for what they hope will be a successful and extended playoff run.
Green’s role with the Cavaliers remains somewhat unclear. While he averaged 21.8 minutes per game and started 18 times with the Pelicans this season, the Cavaliers already have several players—De’Andre Hunter, Max Strus, Isaac Okoro, and Dean Wade—who play similar positions, so his playing time may be limited.
At 31 years old, Green offers significant value to the team with his defensive prowess. Known as one of the NBA’s top perimeter defenders, Green has posted a defensive rating of 118.3 this season, along with averages of 1.10 steals and 0.60 blocks per game. He has also recorded 14 games with multiple steals and set a career high with five steals in a game earlier this year.
Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson has emphasized the importance of depth and versatility all season, and the addition of Green provides another piece for Cleveland as they look to build their postseason strategy.
