Steve Sarkisian Discusses His Excitement About Bill Belichick Coaching at UNC
Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian was among those surprised when Bill Belichick was appointed as the new head coach for UNC’s football team. Sarkisian initially believed the rumors about Belichick’s potential move to UNC were part of a strategy to secure a job in the NFL. However, when Belichick was officially hired, it became clear he was making the transition to college football.
Sarkisian is eager to see Belichick’s move to the college game, noting that it signals the evolving nature of the sport.

“I think it speaks to where college football is heading,” Sarkisian shared with Kay Adams on Up & Adams. “You’ve got Chip Kelly moving to the NFL, Matt Patricia now coaching at Ohio State, and now Belichick entering college football. It’s exciting to think about the direction we’re going. Here’s one of the greatest coaches of all time joining the college ranks because he sees its value. That’s really cool.”
Having spent time in the NFL, most recently as the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, Sarkisian returned to college football after a challenging stint. He has since led Texas to College Football Playoff contention. Like Belichick, he is one of several coaches making the leap from the NFL to college, including Eric Bieniemy and Chip Kelly.
While Sarkisian and Belichick won’t directly face off, as they coach in different conferences, Belichick’s presence in college football could certainly influence the game. With his decades of experience as a Super Bowl-winning head coach, he aims to build success at UNC.
