The Los Angeles Angels have not yet engaged in contract extension talks with key utility player Luis Rengifo, despite his importance to the team’s depth in recent seasons. Rengifo, who has been filling in for an often-injured Anthony Rendon, is set to become a free agent at the end of this season. He recently stated that there have been no discussions about a new deal, noting, “I feel at home with the Angels, but I can’t control that.”
Rengifo was on track for a breakout season last year before a right wrist injury cut it short, requiring season-ending surgery in August. Fortunately, he has had a normal offseason and is fully prepared for this spring. “I feel good and ready to go,” he said, emphasizing his goal to be on the field every day.
This season, Rengifo is competing for the starting second baseman role, but he is also expected to get playing time at third base and in the outfield. His main focus is staying healthy and being available for manager Ron Washington wherever needed. “Last year is in the past, and this year is a new year with new goals,” Rengifo said. “I just want to be in the lineup every day.”
At 27, Rengifo was a potential All-Star last season, posting a .300/.347/.417 batting line with six home runs, 13 doubles, 24 stolen bases, and 30 RBIs in 78 games. However, his wrist injury forced him to miss nearly three weeks before returning briefly for nine games before needing surgery to end his season. This was the second consecutive season Rengifo’s year was cut short due to injury, as he also required surgery for a ruptured left bicep tendon in September 2023.
This year, Rengifo is expected to be the Angels’ primary second baseman but could also play third base and the outfield. Manager Ron Washington said, “We’re going to work him at second and third. Once he gets his legs under him, we’ll give him a shot in the outfield.” Washington added that while Rengifo is strong in reaction-based positions like third base, he also has the skills to succeed at second base.
