The Carolina Panthers’ plans could spell trouble for Bryce Young and the offense.
According to Joe Person of The Athletic, the Panthers are looking to re-sign some of their outgoing free agents, including David Moore and Tommy Tremble. While re-signing Tremble could benefit the team, it might not bode well for last year’s fourth-round pick, Ja’Tavion Sanders. The decision to bring back both Tremble and Moore could also be problematic for Young.
The Panthers were expected to add a wide receiver, possibly with the eighth pick in the NFL Draft. However, it now looks like that addition could be Moore, last year’s WR4. While the team needs more than four wide receivers, they already have two receiving tight ends if they bring Tremble back. This would give them six offensive players to target, not counting running back Chuba Hubbard and another backup.
With limited cap space and a defense that requires significant attention in the draft, adding another offensive weapon may not be feasible. Signing Moore on a cheap deal would add depth to the wide receiver room but doesn’t provide Young with the kind of playmaker he needs to develop. While Young had a strong finish last season with Moore, Xavier Legette, Jalen Coker, and Adam Thielen, he still requires another pass-catching option.
Though there’s still a chance the Panthers could add a wide receiver or tight end, their current approach doesn’t suggest they’ll go after a high-end weapon. Historically, the Panthers have been bargain shoppers when it comes to adding weapons, and with Bryce Young needing support, Moore may be the best they can do.
