Jason Robertson netted a hat trick within a nine-minute span during the second period on Sunday night, leading the Dallas Stars to a 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders in Elmont, N.Y. This was the fourth regular-season hat trick of Robertson’s career and his first since December 1, 2022.
Sam Steel opened the scoring for the Stars just 2:10 into the game, capitalizing on a rebound off a shot by Cody Ceci that deflected off teammate Oskar Back before reaching Steel, who scored by getting the puck past goalie Ilya Sorokin.
The Stars completed a back-to-back road sweep following a 4-2 win against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night, marking their eighth win in their last 10 games (8-1-1). Goalie Jake Oettinger made 34 saves in the win.
The Islanders, who have lost three consecutive games (0-3-0), saw goals from Pierre Engvall, Kyle Palmieri, and Anthony Duclair. New York is now five points behind a wild-card spot, with several teams in between.
The Islanders tied the game early in the second period after a rush down the ice, where Kyle MacLean’s backhanded pass deflected off Engvall’s stick and slipped under Oettinger’s legs.
Robertson started his scoring spree at the 8:48 mark by using Islanders defenseman Scott Perunovich as a screen to fire a shot past Sorokin’s glove. The Islanders quickly responded, tying the game just 10 seconds later when Palmieri, after losing his footing, managed to shoot the puck under Oettinger’s glove.
Robertson then scored his go-ahead and game-winning goals during a power play after Islanders center Casey Cizikas received a match penalty for a head check on Bichsel. With 4:07 remaining, Robertson’s angled shot from the goal line went over a sprawling Sorokin, and he completed his hat trick by converting the rebound from a Wyatt Johnston shot.
Duclair scored his first goal since January 24 by backhanding in a rebound of his own shot at 9:17 of the third period, navigating through a crowded crease.
A potential game-tying goal by Jean-Gabriel Pageau with 4:52 left was disallowed due to goalie interference, as Engvall had nudged Dumba into Oettinger.
