Seahawks Must Retain ‘Bona Fide’ Free Agent Linebacker Ernest Jones IV
The Seattle Seahawks face an important decision regarding the future of linebacker Ernest Jones IV this offseason. At 25 years old, Jones is set to become a free agent after being traded to the Seahawks from the Tennessee Titans in October.
During his 10 games with Seattle, Jones recorded 94 tackles, proving he can be a key defensive asset moving forward. Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton described Jones as an “under-the-radar” free agent the Seahawks should aim to re-sign.
Moton highlights Jones’ consistent high-level production despite bouncing around the league over the past two years. In 2023, during his final season with the Los Angeles Rams, Jones set career highs in tackles (145), tackles for loss (14), pressures (14), sacks (4.5), and pass breakups (six).
After being traded to the Tennessee Titans in August, Jones was then traded again before the 2024 deadline. He ended the 2024 season with 138 tackles, four tackles for loss, four pass breakups, and an interception, while allowing an 85.6 passer rating.
While Jones doesn’t play a premium position, his versatility and steady production in various systems should attract teams willing to offer him a multi-year contract. Moton adds that wherever Jones lands, he will be a reliable starter and a valuable addition to any defense.
Given Jones’ strong performance for Seattle this season, the Seahawks should aim to retain him. However, with other teams likely vying for his services, Seattle may need to make a competitive offer to bring him back for 2025.
