Gustav Nyquist is a player who makes perfect sense for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Having been a long-term member of the team a few seasons ago, Nyquist was a key part of their roster and quickly became a reliable forward through some difficult times during the Brad Larsen era. He is familiar with the city, the core players, and the team’s culture, making a return a natural fit. While Nyquist is currently having a down year with the Nashville Predators at 35 years old, he put up a career-high 75 points last season. This recent slump shouldn’t raise major concerns, as he’s demonstrated his ability to produce offensively in the past.
When he’s at his best, Nyquist is an incredibly intelligent player who can fit into any line, from the first to the fourth. He’s versatile, capable of playing along the wall on the power play, and was one of the Blue Jackets’ most effective penalty killers during his time with the team. Given his experience and versatility, a reunion with Nyquist would strengthen the Blue Jackets’ forward depth.
A trade for Nyquist makes sense for Columbus, as long as the cost is reasonable. With the trade deadline approaching, there’s no reason a deal involving a third-round pick or later, possibly coupled with a lower-tier prospect, couldn’t get it done. This would be a smart move for the Blue Jackets, adding a proven veteran without breaking the bank.
As the NHL trade deadline on March 7 draws near, the Blue Jackets are at a critical juncture in the season. They are looking to strengthen their team in pursuit of their first playoff berth since the pandemic. General manager Don Waddell has expressed that he expects the team to be “moderate buyers,” and it is believed that adding a top-nine forward is a priority to improve the team’s depth. A trade for Nyquist would fit neatly into this plan, providing experience and stability in the forward group as they continue to push toward a postseason spot.
