New York Rangers defenseman Adam Fox is being placed on injured reserve due to an upper-body injury, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Fox is anticipated to be out for a while but is expected to return before the regular season concludes, the source informed The Associated Press on Wednesday, speaking on the condition of anonymity since the team has not officially announced the move.

The 27-year-old sustained the injury during the third period of the Rangers’ 5-1 victory over the Islanders on Tuesday night. With 24 games remaining, the Rangers are two points away from the second and final wild-card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The 2021 Norris Trophy winner has recently played a crucial role on the blue line for the U.S. at the Four Nations Face-Off and has recorded 48 points in 58 games for New York this season.

The condition of defenseman K’Andre Miller is uncertain after he also suffered an injury against the Islanders. Additionally, it’s unclear how Fox’s injury will influence general manager Chris Drury’s decisions regarding pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Ryan Lindgren as the NHL trade deadline approaches on March 7.
