Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter is widely seen by NFL scouts as the likely candidate to be picked first overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. After a standout 2024 season that led the Nittany Lions’ defense to the College Football Playoff Semifinals, Carter’s positive pre-draft buzz faced some challenges during the initial phases of the NFL Scouting Combine.
On Wednesday night, a routine medical check conducted by combine doctors revealed that the First Team All-American is dealing with a stress reaction in his right foot. He was already on the mend from a shoulder injury sustained during the College Football Playoff against Boise State and had no intention of participating in on-field workouts at the combine.
Carter’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, stated that the stress reaction does not require surgery and called it a “non-factor” in terms of Carter’s draft prospects. He anticipates that Carter will be ready for his pro day at Penn State on March 28.
Before the injury news broke, Carter spoke with reporters at the combine, discussing his case for being the top overall pick.
“I believe I’m the best player in the country, and the best player should be chosen first,” he stated. “It’s all about the hard work I’ve done with my dad, who trained me, and the sacrifices I made. I’m confident that I’m the best.”
The Tennessee Titans hold the first pick in this year’s draft and have several needs to address, with the quarterback position being a primary concern, especially since 2023 second-round pick Will Levis has not met expectations in his 21 starts.
