Texans GM Discusses Stefon Diggs’ Free Agency
The Houston Texans are facing a challenging decision regarding Stefon Diggs’ contract situation. With his current deal set to expire ahead of this offseason’s free agency, Diggs will become an unrestricted free agent when the market opens on March 12th. This leaves the Texans contemplating what a new contract for the 31-year-old receiver could look like and whether there’s room for him on the roster for the 2025 season.
Texans general manager Nick Caserio has left the door open for Diggs’ return but emphasized that nothing is certain as free agency approaches.
“Stef’s rehabbing,” Caserio said, referring to Diggs. “He was a valuable asset for our team and helped us win games. We’ll continue the process. He’s a free agent, and his contract will expire in a week or two if we can’t come to an agreement. We’ll keep the dialogue open and make the best decisions for the team. That’s our priority.”
This perspective from Caserio aligns with that of head coach DeMeco Ryans, who also expressed openness to bringing Diggs back under the right circumstances during an interview at the NFL Combine.
Diggs’ 2024 season was cut short due to a torn ACL, but he remained effective when healthy, recording 47 catches for 496 yards and four touchdowns in eight games.
Under new offensive coordinator Nick Caley, the idea of adding a four-time Pro Bowler like Diggs to the roster could be appealing. However, it’s uncertain whether the coaching staff will prioritize maintaining last season’s receiving group or seek new talent from outside the organization.
Diggs is reportedly progressing well in his recovery, and if he’s fully healthy by 2025, he could play a key role in the Texans’ passing game alongside Nico Collins. However, it remains to be seen whether both sides can come to an agreement.
