Los Angeles Chargers Trade Proposal Sends Joey Bosa to Lions
Joey Bosa’s future with the Los Angeles Chargers is uncertain as NFL free agency nears.
Parting ways with Bosa has seemed like a logical move for some time, primarily due to the $25 million in cap space the team would free up by letting him go. However, recent remarks from Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz suggest that the team isn’t entirely opposed to keeping Bosa and his $36.4 million cap hit.
The decision could depend on the options available to the Chargers, including the potential moves made by Khalil Mack in free agency. Additionally, the Chargers will likely assess trade offers as they come in. For instance, Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport proposed a trade sending Bosa to the Detroit Lions in exchange for a fourth-round pick.
“Bosa, 29, has played in more than 10 games only once in the last three years and hasn’t reached 10 sacks since 2021,” Davenport notes. “This has led to speculation that the 2016 No. 3 overall pick could be traded or even cut, particularly if the Chargers plan to re-sign Mack.”
The idea of clearing $25 million in cap space while securing a fourth-round pick could be appealing for the Chargers, especially if Mack returns and pairs with Tuli Tuipulotu as the team’s primary pass rushers. Trading Bosa to an NFC team would also be beneficial, in case he flourishes in a new environment.
While the Chargers could revisit Bosa’s contract if he’s willing to restructure again, after taking a pay cut last year, such a move seems unlikely. The front office would be prudent to seriously consider trade offers like the one proposed.
