Positive Update on Orioles Star Gunnar Henderson After Injury Scare

Baltimore Orioles star Gunnar Henderson experienced a scare during Thursday’s spring training game when he left after just one inning due to “right side discomfort.” However, manager Brandon Hyde later indicated that the injury does not appear serious.

UPDATE, Friday AM: The removal was precautionary, and Henderson will not need an MRI, according to MASN’s Roch Kubatko. While this isn’t a full medical clearance, it’s certainly encouraging news, and Henderson is expected to return to the lineup this weekend.

UPDATE, 2:45 p.m. ET THURS: Henderson was reported to have discomfort on his lower right side, per MASN.

THURSDAY PM: The 23-year-old shortstop left the game after just one inning. Though there has been no official statement from the Orioles, Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun speculated that Henderson might have felt discomfort after attempting to beat out a muffed groundball in the first inning and making a leaping catch in the field. The young infielder was seen leaving the game with a trainer, prompting concern among fans.

Henderson’s importance to the Orioles cannot be overstated. The Alabama native was an All-Star last season, posting an impressive 9.1 WAR, hitting 37 home runs, driving in 92 RBI, and stealing 21 bases. He finished fourth in AL MVP voting and earned a Silver Slugger award.

If Henderson does miss any time, the Orioles could move Jackson Holliday to shortstop, although Holliday has been focusing on improving his play at second base.

The team is hopeful Henderson’s injury is minor and that he’ll be ready for Opening Day on March 27, when the Orioles face the Toronto Blue Jays.
