Mets’ Nick Madrigal Likely Out for the 2025 Season Due to Shoulder Surgery

The New York Mets will likely be without infielder Nick Madrigal for the entire 2025 season due to shoulder surgery.

Manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed on Friday that the utility infielder will undergo surgery on his shoulder, which is expected to sideline him for the year. Madrigal, who was signed to a split contract in January, suffered a fractured left shoulder during a split-squad game on Sunday.

The Mets had hoped to use Madrigal as a versatile bench player capable of covering second base, third base, and shortstop. However, with the injury, the team now faces the decision of either promoting from within or possibly re-signing Jose Iglesias.

Iglesias, a reliable veteran in his mid-30s, played a key role in the Mets’ NLCS run last season. However, it seems the team is currently satisfied with their roster and isn’t actively pursuing a reunion.

Madrigal’s injury could create an opportunity for Luisangel Acuña, a young, versatile, and speedy middle infielder who can play shortstop, second base, and third base. Acuña impressed during his big-league debut last season, posting a .966 OPS with three home runs in 14 games and contributing as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement during the postseason.

At just 22 years old, Acuña’s potential is exciting. If he has a strong spring training, he, along with Brett Baty or Ronny Mauricio, could secure an Opening Day roster spot. Acuña’s experience at shortstop could also provide valuable depth behind Francisco Lindor.
