While the Penguins are not in contention for the Stanley Cup this season, they could influence the race by deciding which players to move. Defenseman Erik Karlsson, one of the most talked-about names, could have a substantial impact on a new team. However, his $10 million salary cap hit and history of team struggles make it challenging to find a trade partner offering significant value.
Karlsson’s future is complicated by the looming salary cap increase of $7.5 million in July, which could help cap-strapped teams take on his hefty salary. However, questions remain about whether a team would want to invest in the soon-to-be 35-year-old Karlsson.
In contrast, the Chicago Blackhawks are also rumored to be considering trading defenseman Seth Jones, who is younger and still commands a hefty $9.5 million cap hit. Jones has shown promise but shares some of Karlsson’s defensive concerns, creating additional competition for the Penguins in the trade market.
The Penguins’ lack of trade assets, combined with their struggles to make the playoffs in recent years, leaves them in a tough position. Karlsson remains a valuable player, but his baggage, including his large contract, complicates potential deals.
Looking ahead to possible trade destinations for Karlsson, the Florida Panthers are one team that could make a move. The Panthers have a competitive roster but a need on the right side of defense, and with some cap space flexibility, they could bring Karlsson on board if necessary adjustments are made.
The Detroit Red Wings, who are desperate to end their playoff drought, could also be a fit. With significant cap space and a need for offense from the blue line, Detroit may view Karlsson as the key to boosting their scoring and playoff chances.
Lastly, the Carolina Hurricanes, despite being tight on cap space, could revisit their previous interest in Karlsson. The Hurricanes have not had much playoff success despite strong regular seasons, and adding Karlsson could help shift the balance.
Other potential suitors could emerge, with teams like the Utah Hockey Club or even the Columbus Blue Jackets, who currently have ample cap space and could benefit from a player of Karlsson’s caliber, lurking in the background. However, for Penguins fans, any trade may not bring the immediate rewards they hope for.
