Eagles Likely to Lose 7-Year Veteran to Unstable NFC Team
Could the Eagles be losing a key player this offseason? With less than two weeks until the NFL offseason truly begins, the anticipation is building.
The first major trade of the offseason took place on Saturday night when the Washington Commanders acquired Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers. Free agency is also right around the corner, and the Philadelphia Eagles are expected to be active participants.
Several of their players are set to hit the open market, including defensive end Josh Sweat, who has spent the first seven years of his career with the Eagles. Any team looking to strengthen its pass rush will likely be eyeing him.
Scott Engel of NJ.com predicted that Sweat could leave Philadelphia to sign with the Arizona Cardinals. “Eagles DE Josh Sweat,” Engel wrote. “Top Prediction: Arizona Cardinals. Confidence level in betting terms: 1 Unit. The Eagles will probably make a strong effort to retain Sweat, but standout Super Bowl performers often secure lucrative deals in free agency, and Arizona will definitely be looking to improve its pass rush. New England also has the funds and needs to make a move.”
After a stellar Super Bowl performance, Sweat, who earned $10 million last season, is projected to receive a three-year deal worth over $56 million, according to Spotract. He had one of the best seasons of his career in 2024, finishing with eight sacks in the regular season and an impressive 2.5 sacks in the Super Bowl. While the Cardinals have a need for an edge rusher, their season was a rollercoaster—they started strong but struggled in the latter half. There have also been rumors surrounding major trades involving players like Kyler Murray and Budda Baker. The big question remains: will Arizona be willing to meet the cost to sign Sweat?
